Check Instructions

LawTrust will print on any check that can be fed through your printer. The program was built around Deluxe check form DLT103. It is a "one-check" per page form which we found works best for record keeping. Click here to see the form. DLT103 is a full page check form with the check blank at the top of the page.

Whatever check form you use, make some photocopies of a blank. You will use these copies to calibrate LawTrust so that it prints perfectly every time.

Start LawTrust and select any client to set up the check writing feature. When you first use the check writing feature to print a check, you will be given these options:

If you are using Deluxe form DLT103, you would select the "Check Top" option. Put the form check in the printer and click "Print." If the form is not printed exactly where you want the words to print, double click on the check entry you just created in "Detailed Entries." Select "Save/Print." You will then see the screen below.

To make adjustments, follow these steps:
  • Make sure you select the proper template for the check you are printing. Top left box.
  • In the "Items" menu, select the item printed on the check that needs adjustment.

How to backup LawTrust

Failing to follow these instructions may result in the loss of your data. Please learn and understand how to backup your data file using the LawTrust built-in backup feature. DO NOT RELY on your own computer backup systems. LawTrust has a built-in backup feature that you must use to backup your data file.

Create your backup data file per the instructions below. We recommend that you save your data file to either a USB thumb drive or better yet, to DropBox. Go Here to get your free, 2 GB cloud storage space from Dropbox.com. It works great and you can easily save your backup files there to be safe.

Under File then Preferences, you may see that the path to the LawTrust data file is named LawTrust.mdb. This is not the backup file of your data. This is the actual data file in the program. If you damage or delete this file, you will lose your data. You must follow the instructions below to make a backup of the data file. There is no substitute for backing up the data file per the instructions below.

You MUST perform a backup of your data using the built-in backup feature of LawTrust and you should do so after each use of the program. Computer glitches happen. Hard drives fail. Users tamper with files and delete files. Failing to make backups is a recipe for disaster. Dropbox.com - get it.

Notice in the above image that I am saving my backups to Dropbox, a cloud based storage solution. They will give you 2 GM of cloud storage for free at dropbox.com. Don't save it locally on a hard drive. Save it where it is safe.

Credit Card and PayPal Issues

Paypal.com is our credit card processing provider. They have notified us (and probably you as well) that your subscription payment for the licensed use our LawTrust software has failed. Typically, this is because the credit card you used at Paypal to subscribe has expired or been canceled by your credit card company. We do not have any information as to why the payment failed. We have no control over this process. We cannot "update, "run" or "charge" your card. There is nothing we can do to fix this. Everything about your payment is through Paypal.com and you. Paypal will attempt to charge your card again within a week or two. If the second attempt fails, your subscription to use LawTrust will be terminated. If that happens, you will need to sign up for a new subscription in order to continue using our LawTrust software program.

Login Issues

LawTrust is dependent on your connection to the Internet. If your Internet service is down, you will be unable to use LawTrust until the connection is restored.

Idle: if your computer is logged in to LawTrust and idle for 15 minutes, the session will time out and you will need to log in again to use LawTrust.

PC Power Off - Shutdown: if your computer powers down, you will be unable to login for five minutes.

Multiple Uses: If one user is logged in, the same user may not log in from any other PC. You do not want multiple users in your office loging in to use LawTrust. If they all access the same database, it will become corrupt and you may lose your data. This is why all users should use the same login, thereby preventing two users from gaining access to the data file at the same time. Always use the same login.

Got a new computer or new install

You have been using the program and now you want to install and use it on a different computer using the same database.

You must make a backup of your data file on the old computer. If you do not know how to do so, click here for instructions. Save the data file to a USB thumb drive OR you can email the backup file to yourself (or any email address) then go to the new computer and open the email - save the file to that computer.

Install LawTrust on the new computer. You will now install the data file from the USB thumb drive onto the new computer. Use the "Restore" feature of LawTrust. If you haven't read how to backup/restore, do so.Click here for instructions. Simply use the "restore" button to put the data file into the new computer.

To download the latest version of LawTrust, click the Download link at the top of this page. The latest version of the program requires that you register the program. Follow the registration instructions found here. So long as your subscription to use the program is current, we will approve your registration and the program will unlock.

Do not delete the program and data file in the old computer until you are satisfied that the transfer worked. We highly recommend that you date and keep your backup files. If you don't and you sustain a computer failure, you will wish you had. It takes all of 3 minutes.

Error Message - Error: 13 - Type mismatch Module

Some users have reported receiving an error message preventing them from logging in to use LawTrust.

You are most likely using Version 4.0. Version 5.11 was released and it provides some additional features you may find useful including the ability to save your login so that you need not enter it each time you start the program. If you have been making backups of your data, you can move to Version 5.11. If not, follow the instructions below to get Version 4.0 back up and running. Once you do, please make a backup of the data file as instructed on this website.

Send an email to support@lawyertrustaccount.com telling us you are having this problem. We will remove your registration and send you an email. Once you receive our email, start the program and click the link that says "Click for new registraion". Enter your information again and the program should work fine. See the image below.

Please use the backup/restore feature of the software. You never know when some glitch will wipe out your hard drive and you will be angry. If you do not understand how to do so, look for the help file on this support page.

How to Register LawTrust

If you are trying out the program, you must register it. Please follow the instructions below.

If you install the program on more than one computer in the office with the idea of everyone working on the same, single bank trust account, you must use only one registered ID and password. Doing so prevents more than one person from opening the program at a time. If two different users open the program on the same account, this will corrupt the data file.

IN ORDER FOR THE PROGRAM TO WORK - you must follow these instructions. Example Username: joneslaw Example Password: jones1234 - If you put in spaces or use symbols, the program will not work. Please read below.

The program will automatically unlock. Make a note of your username and password.

We will have several users using the program, how do we set that up?

The program uses one database file (unless you set up multiple accounts - see help on that topic). If three users in your office open the program and all three access the master database file, you will cause the file to be corrupt. All users must use the same registration. This way, only one user at a time can log-in and use the database. When you create a username and password, share it with all users in the office. Do not let each user set up their own username and password.

I click on the LawTrust icon but the program will not start and run.

If the program ran fine in the past and has now stopped running, something has changed in your computer. It is possible a program file got changed or damaged. Someone may have installed a program or removed a program and this possibly caused a problem.

The first step should be to re-start your computer. Shut it down completely. Turn it off. Start the computer up then wait for the computer to fully load. Now try to start the program. If you get the same error message, try placing your mouse over the LawTrust icon and RIGHT CLICK then select to run the progam as an administrator. If this does not work, hopefully you have been making backups of the data file. Try using the Restore feature of Windows to restore your computer to an earlier date. If you need help understanding how to restore your computer, Google the words "how to restore my Windows 7 computer to an earlier date" - use Windows XP if using XP, etc.

If all else fails, you may need to download and re-install LawTrust. Warning! Make sure you have a backup of your data file. If you have not been using the built-in backup feature of LawTrust, you will need to copy and save your LawTrust.mdb file. If you install LawTrust without having a backup of your data or a copy of your LawTrust.mdb file, you will erase your data file and lose your records.

If you cannot find your LawTrust.mdb file, search your C:/ drive for the LawTrust.mdb file. Once you find it, make a copy of it and save it to a location where you may later find it. You will need it to restore your data if you have not been backing up on a regular basis.

Once you are confident you have your backup data in a safe location, try to uninstall the old LawTrust version on your computer. When completed, install the latest version of LawTrust. Restart your computer. You may then restore your data file. If this does not resolve your issue, contact us. We will gather additional information to determine what may be necessary to get you working again.

Issue with printing - width of paper, etc.

If you are receiving an error message that the report width is larger than your paper size, then we would suspect that you changed a default setting either in LawTrust or in your computer.

Please look at the Preferences settings in the program to see what the default text size is. LawTrust Manual - Click Here. Scroll down through the manual to see the Preferences screen with default settings. If your program settings do not match, then someone has changed the setting. Change it back to the default setting as shown in the manual. Once done, restart the program and try to print again. Please follow the instructions in the manual for these settings.

If the above does not fix the issue, then we would suspect that your Windows font size is not set at normal size. Someone has adjusted the font size from 100% to a larger size. Right click in an open area of your screen (not in the program). Select "Screen Resolution" - click on the words "Make text or other items larger or smaller" then make sure that "Smaller - 100% is checked.

How to write/print a check.

LawTrust will print on any check that can be fed through your printer. The program was built around Deluxe check form DLT103. It is a "one-check" per page form which we found works best for record keeping. Click here to see the form. DLT103 is a full page check form with the check blank at the top of the page.

If you are using some other check form, simply make several photocopies of a blank check for testing.

Put the form check in the printer and click "Print." 1. Click on File.
2. Click on Preferences.
3. Look at the area called "Location Info" - this is where you must add the location to the options. There is a small box that says "Set as Default" - to the immediate right is a smaller box with a white page on it. Click that box. You must now give the location an ID code. So, for example, I want to add Ireland as an option for location. I would indicate "IE" as the State ID and the name of the State would be "Ireland."
4. You will need to change the Zip Length and check the box for Alphanumeric ZipCode as Ireland may have zip codes that look like this: 14R39YY

A subscriber is a LawTrust user who is current in the payment of a subscription fee to use the LawTrust softare.

If you purchased LawTrust prior to February, 2011, you are not a subscriber unless you have signed up for a subscription. Click the Purchase link at the top of this page.

In February, 2011, the pricing structure of the software changed to a subscription plan. The reasons for this change are many. Suffice it to say that between free upgrades and the demands for support, we simply were unable to continue to support the program. Either the program comes to an end with no further upgrades and no support or we offer a cheap alternative.

I try to open the program and an error message appears telling me that the program is open.

Depending on the version of the program you are running, this may be because some other person in your office is also using the program. This is a database safety feature. Only one person can work on the database at a time. So if you have the program in use by another person in the office and they are logged in, this keeps you from using the program at the same time. You would corrupt the database. Find out if another person in the office is using the login. If so, they must exit for you to get into the program. If this isn't the issue, keep reading.

When you exit out of the program, click the X in the red box in the upper right corner of the screen. If you are unfamiliar with Ctrl-Alt-Del and shutting down the lawtrust.exe process then simply re-start your computer. Shut off the computer. Wait a minute. Fire up the computer. There are two possible causes we can address. First, we would suspect it is because your Windows font size is not normal. Someone has adjusted the font size from 100% to some larger size. Right click in an open area of your screen (not in the program). Select "Screen Resolution" - click on the words "Make text or other items larger or smaller" - make sure "Smaller - 100% is checked.

The program has stopped working and won't run.

Restart your computer. Shut it completely off and wait a minute. Start the computer and check the program.

If the program does not run after restart, we would suspect that a program file has been damaged. You will need to download the latest version of LawTrust and install it. If you have been following our instructions to backup your data file, you will need it. If you have not, you must explore and find the "LawTrust.mdb" file. It should be in the C:/lawtrust folder on your hard drive. Find it; right click and save it on your desktop. That is a critical data file. If you download/install LawTrust it will write over the top of the existing program files, including your data file. It will erase your data file.

Make sure you have the data file located and copied before proceeding.

Uninstall the old program before installing the latest version. See the image below on locating the file you need to copy and save before you reinstall the program. Once the new program is installed, restore your backup file. If you do not have a backup file, copy the LawTrust.mdb file to the LawTrust folder as found on your C: drive.

The program will not run. I am using Windows 7.

If the program has been working in Windows 7 and now it is not, it has to do with an update to Windows 7. Sometimes when improvements are made to software, it results in something going wrong in another program. Microsoft Windows comes first. All other software programs come last.

First, try re-starting the computer. If that does not fix it, you may want to do a system restore of your computer back to the point in time where the program was working. If you use the Windows 7 system restore feature and get LawTrust running again, please make a backup of your data and save it. Once you are confident you have your data backed up, update Windows 7 and see if LawTrust stops working again. If it does, remove the old LawTrust program, then download the latest version and run and restore the data file.

WARNING. Do not download and install the latest version of LawTrust without following these instructions. If the above procedures do not fix the problem, make sure you have a backup of your data file. If you have not been using the LawTrust backup feature, you must find your LawTrust.mdb file and copy it to a safe location. If you have not been making backups using the built-in backup/restore feature of LawTrust; and your LawTrust.mdb file is corrupt, you may have lost your data. If you install the latest version of LawTrust, it will write over the top of the data file and erase your data.

If all else fails, download and install the latest version of LawTrust. If you are not currently on a subscription, you will need to subscribe. Click on the Purchase link.

May we put LawTrust on a different computer?

Yes but each computer must be authorized per our subscription terms. You would need to pay additional fees to add the program to other computers that you own. To purchase a subscription, click on the Purchase link at the top of the page to sign up. If you have the program on multiple computers and you are accessing the same database, make sure that each user uses the same login. That way, the database will not be corrupted. So, if Lynn is on the program at the home office and Terry wants to get on the program at the sattelite office, Terry needs to use the same login as Lynn. That way, when Terry trys to login to use LawTrust, Terry will not be able to use the program. An error message will pop-up. Terry would then need to instruct Lynn to log off so that Terry could then work on the program. If you do not follow these instructions, data will be lost and you will have error issues. The program was intended for use on a standalone computer. This is a workaround but requires caution.

How do we install the program on a network?

LawTrust was created and designed to be a stand-alone, desktop application. We do not support network installations. We understand that some users use the program on their networks. Below are instructions users have provided.

When installing the program, install it on a network drive. Do not let it default install to the C: drive.

The program creates a database file called "LawTrust.mdb" - this is the data file. When you install the program, it creates the file in the "LawTrust" folder on your C: drive, if that is where you installed the program. In order for you and another person to use this same database file on his or her computer, they must access this same file.

  • 1. Install LawTrust on all user computers.

  • 2. On the network drive, copy the "LawTrust.mdb" file from to the network drive. Using My Computer, go into the LawTrust folder found on your C: drive (C:/LawTrust/LawTrust.mdb). Find the LawTrust.mdb file, highlight, right click COPY the file.

  • 3. Open the network drive.

  • 4. Create a folder called "LawTrust Data" and copy the LawTrust.mdb file into that folder.

  • 5. Open LawTrust on each computer. Go to File then Preferences. In the "Database Path" field at the top of the pop-up, to the right of the location is a little box. Click on the little box and browse to the network drive where you copied the LawTrust.mdb file. Select the LawTrust.mdb file then click save.

  • 6. Close out of LawTrust.

  • 7. Go to the network user computer and open LawTrust. Check to see if the program opens the file you saved on another computer.

WARNING! all users must use the same login to access the program. If more than one person works in the software, the database file will become corrupted. We do not support network installations.

Use the backup feature of the software to backup your data file. If you corrupt the database, your data will be history.

My computer crashed, how do I restore the program and my data files?

Hopefully you have been using the Backup/Restore feature of LawTrust to make backups of your data. If you have not, you must locate the LawTrust.mdb file.

Find the file at C:/lawtrust and copy it to your desktop. If you do not follow these instructions and you install LawTrust, you will lose your data.

WARNING: If you download and install LawTrust onto a computer where LawTrust has previously been used, the new program will write over the top of files, including the data file. If you have a backup of your data file, Download LawTrust and install it. Use the built-in Backup/Restore feature of LawTrust to restore your data. If you have not been making backups, copy the saved LawTrust.mdb file back into the LawTrust folder on the computer. This should return the data to the program unless there is a corrupt file in the database.

New Computer - New Installation - New Hard Drive - Need the Program Unlocked Again

Download LawTrust and install it. You must be on a subscription plan and current for the program to work.

LawTrust was changed to a subscription fee based program in early 2011. There are further help files located on this page that explain why.

Where is my backup file?

The file has the extension .bak so you can do a search on your computer for files that have .bak as their extension. In the search box, type .bak and hit the Find or Search button. We recommend that you backup your data file and save it to your Dropbox folder. Go to Dropbox.com to acquire a free account. The alterative is to a USB thumb drive.

I lost my data file, what do I do?

This is a very frustrating and troubling event. We understand. That is why this website and the program remind you on each use to backup your data using the built-in backup feature of the program. If you ignore the nag screen and our warnings, you are at risk of losing your data. It takes but one minute to backup your data file.

If you have not been creating backups and there is an issue, you need to find the LawTrust data file. It should be found at the default installation location which is: C:/LawTrust - look for the file named "LawTrust.mdb". This is the program data file. Copy it and paste it on your desktop or put it in a location where you can find it. This assumes the file has not been damaged or made corrupt.

If you cannot find the data file using the step above, use the Windows search feature of your computer to look for the LawTrust files. If you do not know how to do that, Google search for help. Example: Google.com - "how do I search for files on my Windows 7 computer?" You would search for a file like this "*.mdb" - if that does not find it, then go to the next step:

If your hard drive crashed and you have no backup on a CD or thumb drive, you may want to send your hard drive to a data recovery company for assistance. You can always send us a request for help and we will see if we can help you find your data file. support@lawyertrustaccount.com.

Message says the jet database cannot be found.

You may be using the program via a network. This message means that the database file can not be found. This usually occurs if the path to the database is incorrect. You need to check that the path to the database is correct (You must use the physical path on the server to the database and not a virtual path). This is a networking issue that is not related to the LawTrust software.
